The European Solidarity Centre in Gdańsk is one of them: a modern museum that tells the story of how workers, intellectuals, and ordinary people challenged a regime and changed the course of European history.
Your private tour begins at Solidarity Square, where the Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers honours those who died during the 1970 protests. Standing beneath the towering crosses, you will hear about the courage, fear, and hope that filled these shipyard streets.
Passing through Gate No. 2 of the Gdańsk Shipyard – once decorated with flowers and demands during the strikes – you step into a symbolic space where a new chapter of history began in August 1980.
Inside the European Solidarity Centre, your guide will lead you through a chronological exhibition:
from life under communist rule and the December 1970 protests
to the formation of the Inter-Enterprise Strike Committee,
from the signing of the August Agreements

Original shipyard artefacts, archival films, photographs, and the UNESCO-listed 21 Demands give a human face to events that often seem abstract in textbooks. You will meet the key figures of the Solidarity movement – but also thousands of anonymous participants whose courage made peaceful change possible.
Weather permitting, the tour concludes at the rooftop terrace, where shipyard cranes and the Old Town skyline stretch before you. It is a fitting place to reflect on how quickly the world can change when people come together around an idea.
